So, what exactly is link popularity? Put quite simply, link popularity describes the quantity and quality of other Web sites that link back to your Web site. It serves as a basic measure of a given site’s popularity. Generally speaking, the higher your Web site’s link popularity, the higher its ranking among the search engines. In addition, they usually assign higher scores to higher quality links.

Before getting into exactly how to increase your site’s link popularity, first I need to talk about how search engines work. To locate information stored on the millions of Web pages, search engines employ software robots, called spiders, to build lists of key words and phrases found on the Internet. The process spiders use to build these lists is called web crawling. Each search engine works a little differently, but the initial process is generally the same. They usually start with the most heavily trafficked servers and most popular Web pages. The spider then follows every link found on the sites. The information is then indexed so that search engine users may retrieve it later.

What can I do to increase my Web site’s link popularity?

1. Reciprocal links

One way to increase the number of links to your site is to develop relationships with other Web masters and make arrangements to simply “trade” links with them. Contact the owners of businesses that compliment your own and offer to put their link on your site if they will put your link on theirs. Be sure and explain how a link to your site will benefit their customers. You should send the link to them as HTML code and never send your link as an image unless they will also include a text description with it. Not every Web master you contact will agree to link to your site and you may have to approach many Web masters before you see any significant results.

2. Link exchange services

Another way to generate links is to register with a link exchange service. When you register with a link exchange service, they add your link to the links page that other members place on their Web sites. Most of the link exchange services are free, but you should be careful that the links are relevant to your own site content. Otherwise, you may find your site being dropped by the big search engines, since they have been known to ban sites using “link farms” because they artificially increase a link’s popularity.

3. Classified ads

You can also increase link popularity with online classifieds ads. There are countless free classifieds on the Web, though these are not usually considered the highest quality links. You may also submit paid ads, but stick to the more highly trafficked sites, if you can afford it.

4. Write a testimonial

Find Web sites that will allow you to submit a positive testimonial for their product or service. Include a link back to your own site with your signature.

5. Submit your site to directories

There are multiple directories on the Web that will allow you to add your URL for free. Before adding your site to the directory, make sure the links are direct links and not redirecting links. This will make it more search engine friendly. Also, be sure you submit your site to the proper search categories, to increase your link popularity further.

6. Blogs and forums

Each time you post an entry on a blog or chat forum, include a hyperlink to your Web site in your signature. However, avoid posting blatant advertisements, or you will risk being banned.

Link popularity is referred to as the process of enhancing the popularity of a webpage by linking it to other domains to increase search engine ranking of a webpage. Link building, apart from increasing the ranking of a webpage on search engine key word search, also helps increase the PR of a page. Mere search engine optimization, no mater how nicely done, is not sufficient enough to guarantee high search engine ranking.

Major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Alta Vista rely on link popularity to determine the importance of a website and rank it accordingly. If more number of related incoming links your have to your website the better for you to rank high in search engines.

Tips for Improving Link Popularity

* Get listed in directories: One of the best ways I know for improving link popularity in search engines is to get listed in the top directories. Start with Open Directory Project, which is free, but also include Yahoo! Express and LookSmart Express Submit. If your site is relevant to a section in About.com, submit to that network. Search for industry-specific directories and topical search engines in Search Engine Guide’s Search Engine Directory, and submit to relevant databases.

* Build links: Search for the top key phrases you want to be found for, then review the sites that come up. Visit these sites and select those that are noncompetitive. Ask them to exchange links with your site, giving them reasons why your site is valuable and suggesting where a link to you might be appropriate. These are the best sites to be linked to for your search phrases because their high rankings will improve your link popularity, not to mention increase your traffic if their visitors click your link.

* Redesign your site to promote linkability: Provide quality informational resources and outgoing links on your site, such as links to search engines, news portals, and industry professional organizations. Your outgoing links can be important, too.

* Generate content: Write articles in your area of expertise, post them on your site, and submit them to appropriate publications across the Web.

Why is link popularity important?

Outside links help dramatically to increase traffic to your site. Increased traffic can lead to higher page rank and better conversionrates. Many search engines take link popularity into consideration for your website’s page rank by “looking” at how many relevant links are directed to your website.

Here are some strategies that are generally considered to be important to increase link popularity:

* There should be links from the home page to all subpages so that a search engine can transfer some link popularity to the subpages.

* Appropriate anchor text with relevant keywords should be used in the text links that are pointing to pages within a site.

* Getting links from other web sites, particularly sites with high PageRank, can be one of the most powerful site promotion tools.

* One way links often count for more than reciprocal links.

* The webmaster should list his/her site in one or more of the major directories such as Yahoo! or the Open Directory Project.

* The webmaster should only link to sites that he/she can trust, i.e. sites that do not use “spammy techniques”.

* The webmaster should not participate in link exchange programs or link farms , as search engines will ban sites that participate in such programs.

To increase link popularity, many webmasters interlink multiple domains that they own, but often search engines will filter out these links, as such links are not independent votes for a page and are only created to trick the search engines.

At the same time, Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular, and because of that, there is a big need for more ecommerce websites. Many people have answered the call already. Many people who had operated offline for years, are moving their business online, and setting up their own ecommerce websites. It is a smart way to lower business expenses and higher earnings. Unfortunately, most of them fail. Because they over look two very important things for having a successful ecommerce website.

As you can imagine, the competition is very tough. Any product or service that you can think of, already has hundreds if not thousands of ecommerce websites competing for. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make money from your ecommerce website. Even with thousands of ecommerce websites who are your potential rivals, you can still manage to keep your ecommerce website alive and thriving. In order to do that, you have to work on two very important things.

Research And Plan Ahead
This is the most basic yet game changing factor that unfortunately many ecommerce website owners ignore it. They simply think, to have a successful money making ecommerce website, all they have to do is set up their websites. Wrong! One of the most important factors for any successful ecommerce website, or any kind of business for that matter, is the planning and research. Before you even think about setting up your ecommerce website, there must be a thorough planning. A good planning, must consider several things, such as the target market, budget, design and other factors that will play a big role in the overall performance of the website. The more time you spend researching and planning ahead, the better your chances will be for having a successful ecommerce website.

Market Your Ecommerce Website
Again, there are those who overlook this part, and think their job is done after setting up the ecommerce website. They believe once the website is up and running, customer will find its way to their ecommerce website. Wrong! You are not the only one selling the same product/service. There are competition out there that are doing everything they can to attract the customers to their ecommerce website. Your ecommerce websites will not generate any income for you, without a proper marketing.

You need to make your ecommerce website popular and visible to potential customers. Marketing can help you do exactly that. There are several ways to go about web marketing. You can use advertisement systems such as PPC (Paid Per Click) that don’t require a big budget. There are also cost free methods for marketing your ecommerce website like SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Search Engine Optimization allows your ecommerce website to achieve higher search engine ranking, which will make your site more visible. While SEO can be very affective and have a long lasting result, it may take some time for you to see its effects. The choice of the web marketing option depends on the need of your website.

Remember to keep promoting and marketing your site. Marketing continuously will allow you to reach more people who can be your potential customers. The more people you reach, the more sales you will have. Never stop working on promotion and marketing. Continuous marketing is the key to the success of your ecommerce website.
